The Fredonia Wind Ensemble, under the direction of Dr. Paula Holcomb, performs in King Concert Hall.
SUNY Fredonia’s Wind Ensemble will conclude its spring performance season with an exciting concert, featuring the premiere of a work by SUNY Fredonia student composition major Wolfgang Scheitinger and graduate wind conducting assistant Benjamin Kohn at the podium, at King Concert Hall on Saturday, April 29.
The concert at 8 p.m. is free and open to the public.
Opening the performance will be a work, “Press On,” by violist Jessica Meyer, commissioned by the President’s Own United States Marine Band, which features the ensemble’s percussion section. Joaquin Rodrigo's gorgeous composition, “Adagio," will draw upon the principal woodwinds as they soar through the flourishes of Portugal, Rodrigo's home country.
"Crank It," written by Mr. Scheitinger, explores the extremes of the ensemble from big band to beautiful expressive lines and timbres. Scheitinger is a senior double major – Music Performance: Bassoon and Music Composition – from West Orange, N.J. He is also the ensemble’s principal bassoonist.
“It is truly an innovative work so be sure to hear it!” said School of Music Professor Paula Holcomb, who is wind ensemble director and director of bands in the School of Music.
Mr. Kohn, of Campbell Hall, will conclude his studies by conducting Aaron Copland's "Variations on a Shaker Melody," which is based on "Tis a Gift to Be Simple."
The ensemble will close out the year with Symphony in B flat, by Paul Hindemith, an epic work for the ensemble.
