The Western New York Chamber Orchestra will present a world premiere piano concerto as part of a February concert.
“Lasser, Migó & Copland” takes place on Sunday, Feb. 16 at 3 p.m. in King Concert Hall, Rockefeller Arts Center, at SUNY Fredonia. The concert is part of WNYCO’s Classics Series.
Tickets are available online 24/7. Tickets may also be purchased on Monday, Wednesday or Friday by phone at (716) 673-3501 or in person at the Fredonia Ticket Office in the Williams Center during the same hours.
The Western New York Chamber Orchestra, under the direction of Maestro Glen Cortese, is an ensemble-in-residence at the Fredonia School of Music. Featured in the Feb. 16 concert will be the world premiere of Marc Migó’s piano concerto, “El Carnaval de las Indias.”
Born in 1993 in Barcelona, Dr. Migó studied at the Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya. In 2017, he was accepted into The Juilliard School as a CV Starr Fellow to pursue his master’s degree in Music. While at Juilliard, he was awarded the 2018 Orchestral Composition Prize, and would win the prize again in 2021.
Following his enrollment in Juilliard’s inaugural Opera Lab program (2020), Migó received a commission from UrbanArias in Washington, D.C., to compose an original opera with librettist John de los Santos as part of the Decameron Opera Coalition. The resulting work, “The Roost,” premiered later that year and was inducted into The Library of Congress’ Performing Arts COVID-19 Response Collection.
After receiving his master’s degree, Migó continued his compositional studies with John Corigliano in pursuit of his doctoral degree, which was awarded in 2024.
Also, on the Feb. 16 program will be a performance of Aaron Copland’s masterpiece “Appalachian Spring,” marking the 125th anniversary of the composer’s birth. The concert will open with Philip Lasser’s “A Mask In The Mirror.”
The concert is sponsored by the Western New York Chamber Orchestra and the New York State Council for the Arts, The Cooper Foundation, and the SUNY Fredonia School of Music as part of the 2024-25 Lake Shore Savings Season.
