SUNY Fredonia English department invites all faculty and staff members, students and general public to a free event featuring Fiction writer, Eugene Cross. This event will be held on Thursday, March 14, in room 202 of McEwen. Two activities will be taking place: at 4 p.m., Cross will give a craft talk, allowing for student interaction, and at 7 p.m., guests will have the chance to get books signed and hear Cross read pieces from his work.

The Mary Louise White Visiting Writers Series invites one poet and one fiction writer each semester to expose writing students to such admired writers such as Naomi Shihab Nye, Edwidge Danticat, Steve Almond, Ilya Kaminsky, Benjamin Percy, and Pulitzer Prize nominated Karen Russell. The Mary Louise White Visiting Writers Series has become nationally acclaimed.

Cross is the writer of “Fires of our Choosing”. This story was listed for the Frank O’ Connor International Short Story Award. Narrative Magazine named him “20 Best New Writers” and his story “Harvesters” is recognized as “Top Five Story of 2009-2010”. During his career he received scholarships from the Chautauqua Writers’ Festival and the Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference. In 2009, he won the Dzanc Prize for Excellence in Literary Fiction and Community Service and recognized for “2012 Best American Short Stories’ 100 Distinguished Stories”. Currently, Cross teaches in the Fiction Department at Columbia College in Chicago.
