Four members selected for national scholarships
The SUNY Fredonia chapter of Golden Key International Honour Society has received a national ranking, and four members have been awarded a total of $20,000 in scholarships.
Kazlin Mason, a graduate student in SUNY Fredonia’s speech language pathology program, is one of only 12 students in the country to receive a Graduate Scholar Award, worth $10,000. Ms. Mason received her Bachelor of Science in speech language pathology from SUNY Fredonia and currently serves as vice president of the local Golden Key chapter.
Ms. Mason and another graduate student, Erin McGarry, were among 23 students nationwide to receive Pillars of Excellence Awards, worth $5,000 and $3,000 respectively. Ms. McGarry graduated from SUNY Fredonia with a Bachelor of Science degree in music therapy and is pursuing a master’s degree in music.
Zhuojun (Georgie) Fu, a double major in public relations and computer science, was given the Golden Key Regional Student Leader Award for Region 10, the region in which SUNY Fredonia is located. Ms. Fu, who previously served as president of the local chapter — the chapter’s first international student to serve in that capacity — was one of only 10 members nationwide who received the $1,000 award.
Nirasha Premaratne, who graduated in May with a master’s degree in education, was among eight national recipients of a $1,000 grant to conduct research in her chosen field.
In addition to these individual awards, the SUNY Fredonia chapter has received a Silver Chapter Standing for meeting certain requirements in the areas of academics, leadership and service.
Golden Key, the largest collegiate academic honor society in the world, recognizes and encourages scholastic achievement and excellence among college and university students from all academic disciplines. Membership into Golden Key is by invitation only, with only the top 15 percent of students invited to join. The SUNY Fredonia chapter has nearly 150 members.
