A registration desk, where prepaid show tickets and other event information can be picked up, will be held Friday, 3 to 7 p.m., at University Commons.

Best-selling author Wendi Corsi Staub, the 2008 SUNY Fredonia Commencement speaker, will deliver a lecture Friday, beginning at 3 p.m., at Rosch Recital Hall as part of the Convocation Series. “Problem Puppies, Persnickety Publishers, and Other Potholes on the Road to Bestsellerdom” is the title of her lecture, focusing on creativity and entrepreneurship.

Cranston Marché will host a pre-show buffet, 5 to 7:30 p.m., for those with tickets to Friday evening performances. Hors d’oeuvres, beef-on-weck, pizza, cheese platters and other light fare will be served.

An evening of a cappella music with Overboard will be presented at the 1891 Fredonia Opera House from 8 to 10 p.m. The repertoire of this all-male group from Boston consists primarily of contemporary rock/pop songs – with covers of Rascall Flatts, Stevie Wonder and the Beatles – yet it remains true to the a cappella tradition with “Blue Moon,” “In the Still of the Night” and “Stand By Me.”

Several of SUNY Fredonia’s best-known a cappella groups will also perform on the Opera House stage.

The play, “Don Juan in Chicago,” which finds the dashing nobleman in the 20th century dealing with the consequences of making a pact with the devil for immortality, will be presented by the Performing Arts Company on Friday, 8 p.m., at Bartlett Theatre.

On Saturday, registration and ticket pick-up will be held at University Commons from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Complimentary coffee and pastries will be served to registered guests at Cranston Marché from 9 to 11 a.m.

The by-invitation-only Scholars’ Breakfast will be held at the Steele Hall Fieldhouse from 9 to 10:30 a.m.

The Blue Devil Volleyball Invitational gets underway at Dods Hall at 11 a.m. and runs until 7 p.m. The women’s varsity soccer team will host Buffalo State at 1 p.m. at University Stadium. A club ice hockey game will be played at Steele Hall Ice Arena from 3:15 to 6:15 p.m.

Off-campus attractions include tours of the Lucy-Desi Museum in nearby Jamestown, with bus transportation provided, from 1 to 4 p.m., and tours of area wineries, offered free with weekend registration, from noon to 3 p.m.

Alpha Lambda Delta will induct new members at an invitation-only ceremony beginning at 2 p.m.

The School of Music’s Wind Ensemble, under the direction of Dr. Paula Holcomb, will present a free concert at King Concert Hall at 8 p.m.
