The Fredonia Chamber Singers, just back from their annual New York State Spring Tour, will perform Sunday, April 15, at 4 p.m. at Juliet J. Rosch Recital Hall. James Piorkowski, professor of guitar studies at SUNY Fredonia, will be the featured guest artist.
Highlights of the post-tour concert include “The Greatest of These,” a setting of the biblical text from First Corinthians, Chapter 13, commissioned and written expressly for the choir by Mr. Piorkowski; and “Romancero Gitano,” a seven-moment setting of poems by Federico Garcia Lorca by composer Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco.
Also featured will be “Songs Mein Grossmana Sang,” humorous nursery rhyme settings by Lloyd Pfautsch; three pieces from the “Frostiana” suites by Randall Thompson; a beautiful arrangement of “Dixie” by Norman Luboff; and “Choral Bagatelles,” four pieces written by SUNY Fredonia graduate Sean Doyle. Doyle was awarded a bachelor’s in music composition in 2005 and master’s in music theory/composition in 2006.
Donald P. Lang, professor of music at SUNY Fredonia, is in his 27th year as director of the Chamber Singers. A sought after guest conductor, choral clinician and adjudicator throughout the United States and Canada, Dr. Lang was recently designated the Director of Choral Activities for the School of Music at Fredonia.
A tour of Wales, England and Scotland will be undertaken by the 27-member Chamber Singers beginning May 19 and continuing through June 4.
