American multi-media artist Nina Katchadourian of Brooklyn, N.Y., is the first speaker of the 2011-12 Visiting Artist Program at SUNY Fredonia. Her presentation will take place Thursday, Sept. 15 at 8:30 p.m. in McEwen 209. The event is free and open to the public.
The Visiting Artist Program is sponsored by the Department of Visual Arts and New Media, and is open to all, series coordinator Professor Liz Lee said.
Known for conceptual works that explore themes of mapping, translation, and public space, Katchadourian works in a wide variety of media, including photography, sculpture, video and sound. She has been exhibited domestically and internationally at places such as PS1/MoMA, the Serpentine Gallery, the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, New Langton Arts, Artists Space, SculptureCenter, and the Palais de Tokyo.
She is currently at work on a permanent public piece, commissioned for a border crossing station between the U.S. and Canada. Katchadourian is represented by Catharine Clark gallery in San Francisco.
In February 2010, she was the artist in residence at the Dunedin Public Art Gallery in Dunedin, New Zealand, where she had a solo show entitled "Seat Assignment."
In January 2006, the Turku Art Museum in Finland featured a solo show of her work and in June 2006, the Tang Museum in Saratoga Springs exhibited a 10-year survey of her work and published an accompanying monograph entitled "All Forms of Attraction."
