The Arts and Humanities Brown Bag Series at SUNY Fredonia will present a panel discussion on the topic of copyright infringement on Wednesday, Feb. 2 at noon in S-104 of the Williams Center. The discussion ends with the Brown Bag Dessert and informal conversation with the panelists. The event is free and open to faculty, students and the general public.
The first of the four panel discussions, this event is entitled, “Creative Re-Use or Copyright Infringement?: The Art and Ethics of Appropriation.” Four faculty panelists will examine whether it is beneficial or criminal to share new thoughts and ideas by borrowing aspects from past visual culture outlets, also called appropriate art. This type of art became most prevalent during the 2008 election when artist Shepard Fairey manipulated an Associated Press photo and created the now famous Barack Obama “Hope” poster.
Panelists will be: Liz Lee, professor of photography; Bernd Gottinger, associate professor of sound recording technology; Leesa Rittelmann, associate professor of visual arts and new media; and Peter Tucker, assistant professor of visual arts and new media.
Future events in the series, which is sponsored by the Fredonia College Foundation's Carnahan-Jackson Humanities Fund and the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, will take place on March 2 with “Reimagining Undergraduate Education: AASCU’s Red Balloon Project,” April 6 with “Rethinking Boundaries and Borders: The Underground Railroad in the Classroom,“ and on May 4 with a discussion on “Imaginary Countries: Writers Re-imagining Their Nations from Exile.”
