A pair of freshmen roommates combined on the game-winning goal Saturday as Fredonia men's soccer nipped Geneseo, 1-0, in double-overtime at University Stadium.
Matt Cullen (East Northport/East Northport) was on the receiving end of a pass from Cole Teelin (Manlius/Fayetteville-Manlius) in the 104th minute of the SUNYAC home match. Cullen took a low shot from inside the box and set off a wild celebration that was weeks in coming.
The Blue Devils improved to 3-6-1 overall. More importantly, they are 1-3-0 in the conference."That puts us," Head Coach P.J. Gondek said, "right back in the thick of the playoff race."
The loss dropped Geneseo to 1-2-1 in the conference and 3-4-3 overall.
It was the first collegiate goal for Cullen and the first collegiate point for Teelin, who started the game-winning play with a throw-in from the right sideline. Junior midfielder Chad Gilson (Olcott/Newfane) received the ball and tapped it right back to Teelin, whose cross pass through a narrow opening in the Geneseo defense found Cullen stationed in front of the net.
Geneseo goalkeeper Dillon Medd had little time to react to the shot. He finished with five saves.
Junior goalkeeper Ty Bentham (Columbus, Ind./Columbus North) was called on to make only one save while posting his fourth shutout of the season. Geneseo's best chance resulted in a header off the right post late in the first half.
"It was a gutsy effort today," Gondek said. "We showed what we can be."
The Blue Devils have a Tuesday night non-conference match at Alfred University before returning to SUNYAC competition next Saturday afternoon against SUNY Buffalo State.
