The Day of the Dead, or “Día de los Muertos,” will be celebrated with two events on campus.

On Oct. 31, from 5 to 7:30 p.m. in the Williams Center Multipurpose Room, activities will include a short workshop on constructing altars/ofrendas at 5 p.m., followed by construction of altars/ofrendas by student groups (basic supplies will be provided), and a display of exhibits about Day of the Dead done by students in the HIST 215 (Holidays and American Cultures) class. At 6 p.m., there will be an illustrated talk about El Día de los Muertos in Oaxaca, Mexico, by professors Ellen Litwicki and Carmen Rivera, followed by voting for the best altar/ofrenda constructed during the event.

Refreshments will be provided, and participants will include students from two Spanish and history classes, as well as visiting students from Mexico. The event is free and open to campus.

The next day, on Nov. 1 at 2 p.m., the celebration of Day of the Dead will continue with a panel discussion in Williams Center Room S204, on "Cultural Attitudes Toward Death" in different parts of the world, to be followed by a question and answer session. Participants will be faculty members Rebha Sabharwal of the Department of Sociocultural and Justice Sciences, Dr. Xin Fan of the Department of History and Dr. Shazad Mohammed of the Department of Business Administration.
