Chautauqua County Home

Humane Society

CSTEP Blood Drive

The SUNY Fredonia Collegiate Science and Technology Entry Program (CSTEP) and SUNY Fredonia Seneca Nation Science and Technology Entry Program (STEP) along with Native American SUNY: Western Consortium, partnered with Upstate New York Transplant Services (UNYTS) to hold a community blood drive in honor of President Virginia Horvath’s Inauguration. The blood drive took place on Thursday, Sept. 20 at the Cattaraugus Indian Reservation at the Fire Department in Irving.

 

To cap-off a week of celebration, more than 400 SUNY Fredonia students, faculty, staff and alumni joined together at more than 25 not-for-profit organizations across Western New York to volunteer in a variety of capacities.

Some used their professional skills which they have developed at SUNY Fredonia, while others simply loaned a hand and some muscle where it could make a difference.  Newly installed President Horvath was personally involved at the Chautauqua County Home, Point Gratiot Beach and Chautauqua County Rural Ministry.

ERIE COUNTY LOCATIONS:

  • Alzheimer Association Awareness Walk, Delaware Park/Buffalo Zoo, 10 a.m. to noon--Members of Fredonia’s Sigma Kappa sorority participated in the fundraiser.
     

Museum of Science

  • Above, at the Buffalo Museum of Science bilingual students served as translators to help celebrate Hispanic Heritage Day at the museum and honor Hispanic Americans scientific accomplishments.
     
  • At the Gowanda Historical Hollywood Theater, 38 W. Main St., Gowanda, volunteers began restoration efforts of theater’s ballroom & Wurlitzer organ.

Croatia Church
 

  • (Above photo) At Our Lady of Bistrica Croatian Roman Catholic Church on Abbott Road, Lackawanna, students joined SUNY Fredonia Business Faculty in a fall cleanup and repair of the grounds, yard and gardens. 
     
  • At the Springville Boys and Girls Club, Maple Street, Springville, volunteers to assist with landscaping and painting efforts.


CHAUTAUQUA COUNTY LOCATIONS:

  • For the Academy Heights Neighborhood Association of Dunkirk, students pruned and cleaned up "GreenFest" trees, planted new trees on Main Street in Dunkirk, and continued restoration of Bicentennial Park. Volunteers included Education majors and the Teacher Education Club.
     
  • At the Boys and Girls Club of Northern Chautauqua County, Fredonia State Basketball students offered a Mini Sports Clinic, providing team building activities and skill drills.
     
  • At Camp Gross (Youth Camp), Cassadaga, members of Alpha Phi Omega cleaned up grounds, prepared the camp for fall, and painted picnic tables.
     
  • At the Campus and Community Children's Center, Fredonia campus, Early Childhood Education majors cleaned toys, organized closets, set up gym and other play spaces.
     
  • At the Chautauqua County Home, members of the English honor society, Sigma Tau Delta, read literature and discussed the selections with County Home residents.
     
  • For the Chautauqua County Rural Ministry, the Delta Chi Fraternity assisted with: Furniture Gallery, The Friendly Kitchen, Gleaning Project and Coburn Block Units.
         
  • At the Darwin R. Barker Library in Fredonia, School of Music students demonstrated string instruments in two free Children’s Concerts.
     
  • At the Dunkirk Free Library, volunteers presented computer literacy classes (internet and email instruction); story time; and a craft workshop.
     
  • At Fredonia Place, English and Communication Disorders & Sciences majors read literary selections and conversed with memory-wing residents.

Making bluebird houses
 

  • (Above photo) At the Greystone Nature Preserve, Fredonia, student and faculty volunteers refurbished and painted bluebird houses and installed them in bluebird habitat areas, they also planted oak trees.
     
  • For a Habitat for Humanity project in Mayville, the Fredonia State Track Team painted, landscaped, moved materials, and prepared for a brick entryway project.
     
  • As part of the International Coastal Cleanup, volunteers went to Point Gratiot, Wright Park, and Cedar Beach to weigh and sort debris, and record information. Volunteers included Biology majors and the Fredonia State Swimming & Diving Team.
     
  • For the Lake Shore Humane Society, students and staff planted trees and grass at its new facility, worked with cats, and assisted with pet adoptions.
     
  • At St. Columban’s on the Lake in Silver Creek, volunteers assisted with social and recreational activities.
     
  • To continue the ongoing SUNY Fredonia Campus Invasive Species Pull, residents of Igoe Hall led an invasive species pull in the campus woodlot.  
     
  • Student-led cleanup was undertaken in Barker Commons, Russell Joy Park, and streets throughout the village of Fredonia.
     
  • At the WCA Home in Fredonia, members of English honor society, Sigma Tau Delta, read literature and discussed the selections with WCA’s residents.
