Educational Development Program (EDP) at SUNY Fredonia will honor its top students and graduate Rachael Howard Richardson of Atlanta, GA, at  its 24th Annual Awards Ceremony and Chi Alpha Epsilon National Honor Society Induction on Tuesday, March 7 at 4 p.m. in the Williams Center .
 
Among the honorees will be Class of 1998 graduate Rachael Howard Richardson of Atlanta, GA, who will be presented with the Distinguished Alumna Award.  Ms. Richardson came to the university through EDP in 1994 after battling poverty and homelessness as a teen in New York City. 

“There is no doubt that I would be dead without finding Fredonia,” Ms. Richardson said.  ““My life was saved by being accepted to SUNY Fredonia…I owe everything to them for choosing to take a chance on me.” 
 

Scholarships and Awards

  • Stephanie Strauf, sophomore social work major from Westfield , Director’s Award;
  • William Booth, senior physics major from Lafayette , Tenn. , Outstanding EDP Tutor of the Year;
  • Christopher Killian, senior criminal justice major from Mexico , N.Y., Gregorio Antonio Memorial Award
  • SUNY Fredonia Office of Admissions, the Exemplary Service Award;
  • Lauren Byrd (junior music business major from Buffalo), EDP Community Service Award
  • Elvira Gonzalez (sophomore business administration major from Bronx), EDP Community Service Award
  • Eddie Humphrey (sophomore liberal arts major from West Hempstead), EDP Community Service Award
  • Martine Jerome (sophomore speech and language disorders major from Brooklyn) EDP Community Service Award
  • Kateybeth Shaw (sophomore psychology major from West Seneca) EDP Community Service Award;
  • Raiysa Epps (senior communication major from Bronx), Arthur O. Eve Scholarship
  • Jillian Kish (senior English major from Cheektowaga), Arthur O. Eve Scholarship
  • Sheena Rodriguez (senior visual arts major from Fredonia) Arthur O. Eve Scholarship
     

Academic honors certificates

In addition, 23 EDP students who earned a 3.3 grade-point average or better while completing 12 or more credit hours during the Spring 2005 and Fall 2005 semesters will receive a gold academic certificate.  Forty-three EDP students who earned a 2.7 – 3.29 grade-point average will receive a silver certificate.
 
“Public recognition of our students’ achievements in the classroom not only encourages them to continue to excel, but also challenges other students in the program to strive for their own measure of success,” said Kathleen Bonds, SUNY Fredonia EDP Director.  “These awards also give the staff of EDP the opportunity to thank the campus and community, with whom we work closely throughout the year, for their assistance in realizing our mission to serve the students in this program.”

Honor Society Induction

Prior to the awards program, 13 students will be inducted into the Alpha Mu chapter of Chi Alpha Epsilon National Honor Society (XAE).  Inductees include EDP and Full Opportunity Program students who achieved a cumulative 3.0 GPA or higher for two consecutive semesters while attending SUNY Fredonia full time.
