EDP to honor alumnus Amos Goodwine and students March 13

Amos Goodwine, Class of 1972

Amos Goodwine Jr., ’72, will be honored as the 2013 Distinguished Alumni of the SUNY Fredonia Educational Development Program at its 31st annual awards ceremony on Wednesday, March 13, at 4 p.m. in the Williams Center Horizon Room. Goodwine will also be on campus on Tuesday, March 12, at 4 p.m. to deliver a talk as part of the EDP Alumni Speaker Series at the Horizon Room. All members of the campus community are invited to attend.

Goodwine recently retired as coordinator of Workforce Investment Programs for the Erie, PA school district, and has become a pastor at the Greater Emmanuel A.M.E. Church in Aliquippa, Pa. He spent his professional career in Erie, where he held various positions with the Greater Erie Community Action Committee, including Upward Bound director and Employment Training and Educational Division manager.

One of the EDP’s first graduates at SUNY Fredonia, Goodwine earned his undergraduate degree in Business Administration.

Since 2005, Goodwine has been a member of the Fredonia College Foundation Board of Directors. He was inducted into the SUNY Fredonia Athletic Hall of Fame, class of 1992, for his achievements in basketball.

EDP’s Distinguished Alumni Award is presented to a graduate of SUNY Fredonia’s EDP who has accomplished personal and career goals and demonstrated a commitment to leadership and academic excellence. Many students will be honored at the awards ceremony.
Student Awards to be given

“Celebrating our students’ accomplishments in this public forum and acknowledging their academic successes encourages them to remember their power to excel and sets the perfect example for other students to believe in themselves and understand that hard work matters,” said David M. White, EDP director. “This event also provides the opportunity for our program to thank the campus and community for their support and assistance in serving EDP students, White added.”

Outstanding EDP Tutor of the Year awards will be presented to: Brandon Bernard, senior, Social Studies - Adolescence Education, Marilla, N.Y.; Abigail Brennan, senior, Math – Adolescence Education, Rochester; and David Butzer, senior, Chemistry - Adolescence Education, Fort Collins, N.Y.

Arthur O. Eve Scholarships will be presented to: Christian Figueroa, junior, Social Work, Dunkirk; Lasheri Mayes, senior, Sociology, Buffalo; and Patrick McDonnell, junior, Psychology, Alden, N.Y.

The Director’s Award will be given to Johnathan Sales, sophomore, Music Education, Buffalo. The Gregory Antonio Award will be presented to Keah Brown, senior, Communication – Journalism, Lockport. The Exemplary Service designation will be given to University Accounting.

EDP students who earned a GPA of 2.70 or higher while completing 12 credits or more in the spring and fall semesters in 2012 will receive academic certificates. Silver certificates will be awarded to students with GPAs between 2.70 and 3.29. Gold certificates will be awarded to students between 3.30 and 4.0. Also, students who participated in volunteer or community service will be recognized.

Students who achieve a cumulative 3.0 GPA or higher for two consecutive semesters and attend SUNY Fredonia in a full-time capacity are eligible for induction into Chi Alpha Epsilon National Honor Society. Six inductees will be welcomed into Chi Alpha Epsilon, Alpha Mu chapter, during a private induction ceremony preceding the awards program. Inductees include EDP and Full Opportunity Programs students.

Chi Alpha Epsilon stands for Center for Academic Excellence and was founded at West Chester University of Pennsylvania in 1990 by Dr. Elbert M. Saddler. SUNY Fredonia’s chapter was started in 1999 and has 182 inductees. The Spring 2013 Chi Alpha Epsilon National Honor Society inductees include: David Astacio, Victoria Banach, Clive Brown, Keah Brown, Laura Kukowski and Jennifer Santiago.
