SUNY Fredonia School of Music will present a Guest Artist Recital Wednesday, Oct. 20 at 8 p.m. It will feature Gabriel Beavers, bassoon, with pianist Luciana Soares. The recital will take place in Rosch Recital Hall and is open and free to the public.
Gabriel Beavers is an Assistant Professor of Bassoon at Louisiana State University. Prior to joining the faculty at LSU, he served as Principal Bassoon with the Virginia Symphony. Formerly a member of the New World Symphony, he has also performed as Acting Principal Bassoon with the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra and the Jacksonville Symphony and served as Acting Second Bassoon with the Milwaukee Symphony for one season. Mr. Beavers has also previously held the position of Visiting Assistant Professor at the University of Missouri-Columbia School of Music.
In addition to his orchestral activities, he has an active schedule of solo and chamber performances. He has appeared as a concerto soloist with the Virginia Symphony and Louisiana Sinfonietta and has given recitals throughout the United States , Europe and South America. His solo CD, Gordon Jacob: Music for Bassoon has been released to critical acclaim on the Mark Masters Label. He attended both Boston University and Southern Methodist University where he studied with Matthew Ruggiero and Wilfred Roberts.
Luciana Soares is the winner of many awards in both the United States and her native Brazil, she performs frequently as soloist and collaborative pianist at concert halls throughout the two countries. In addition to teaching and performing a variety of repertoires ranging from Baroque to contemporary, Soares is strongly devoted to promoting the music of Brazil. Her accomplishments as a researcher and performer have taken her to presenting lectures and recitals of Brazilian music at universities, concert series and conferences throughout the United States.
Her solo recording, Brasileira: Piano Music by Brazilian Women, has been released on Centaur Records and is available worldwide. A dedicated chamber musician and advocate of new music, she frequently collaborates with artists in the South and has given world premieres of numerous works. Currently, Soares is an Associate Professor of Piano at Nicholls State University.
The recital will include Faocitose by Liduino Pitombeira (b. 1962), Ciranda Das Sete Notas by Heitor Villa-Lobos, Moods in Blue for Bassoon and Piano by Gernot Wolfgang (b. 1957), and Strange Interlude No. 3 for Bassoon and Piano by James Lassen.
Dr. Beavers will also give a bassoon master class with SUNY Fredonia students in the afternoon from 4-6 pm.
