Charcoal Work by Maribel AvilaFredonia Showcase 2012

By Doug Osborne-Coy

Update Feb. 17, 2012:
Student artists from all class levels are selected for the exhibition by the faculty of the Department of Visual Arts and New Media.

Graphic Design major Kurt McGhee is among the artists. He has a handmade book on display as part the exhibition.

“Its meaning is everything and nothing,” McGhee said of the work as he flipped through the waxy pages. “My thought was, if everything exists then how can nothing exist within everything?”

Taylor Hultquist, an Animation/Illustration major who has a fascination with ocean life, has both a stop-motion video and a metal and plastic sculpture on display.

Her video, which received many views during the opening reception for the show, depicts a girl whose desire to become a fish disrupts her better judgment. The sculpture is her humanistic take on a jellyfish.

Photography major Jeremy Hyland has a photo on display from a larger series that encompasses dreams he has experienced.

“I based my series on Dutch-Renaissance paintings,” he said. “I want to capture that form in pictures.”

The exhibition runs through Feb. 26. The gallery hours are 2 to 6 p.m. Tuesdays through Thursdays, 2 to 8 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays and 2 to 6 p.m. on Sundays. Admission is free and open to the public.

Fredonia Showcase design by Brett Smith

The works of more than 40 students from the Department of Visual Arts and New Media at SUNY Fredonia will be displayed in the Cathy and Jesse Marion Art Gallery at Rockefeller Arts Center beginning Friday, Feb. 3.

The “Fredonia Showcase” exhibition will open with a reception in the art gallery from 7 to 9 p.m. on Feb. 3. The show will run through Sunday, Feb. 26. Both the reception and exhibition are free and open to the public.

“The ‘Fredonia Showcase’ is an annual event that highlights the excellent work of the students of the Department of Visual Arts and New Media,” Art Gallery Director Tina Hastings said. “The artwork is selected by faculty members in all disciplines to be included in the exhibition.”

She explained the exhibition is “an opportunity for students to see their work displayed in a gallery setting instead of just in the studio. It is an honor to have work included in the exhibition and students are able to build their exhibition resume.”

The “Fredonia Showcase” will feature works by Visual Arts and New Media students from various class levels.

Gallery hours are 2 to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, 2 to 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday.
