The Department of Visual Arts and New Media is currently hosting its Visiting Artist Lecture Series, a program that has welcomed visiting artists for 32 years. This year, the department welcomes photographer and writer Robert Hirsch, conceptual artist Josh Greene, graphic designer Brian Grunert, and performance artist Jill Pangallo.
The series, which started Feb. 18 with Hirsch, continued March 4 with Greene, and next will feature April 22 with Grunert. It concludes April 29 with Pangallo.
All members of the campus and community are welcome to the lectures, which begin at 8:30 p.m. in McEwen Hall Room 209. There is no charge for admission.
About the series:
The series exposes students majoring in visual arts to distinguished professionals in the art and design world.
The speakers provide information about the many directions, options and possibilities inherent in art and design from professionals who are working regionally, nationally and internationally.
Past visiting artists have included Anthony Bannon of the George Eastman House, and James Gurney, an illustrator who worked for National Geographic Magazine.
Comments:
Kim Steinhilber, a senior graphic design major from Buffalo, has attended five different series in her time at SUNY Fredonia.
She notes, “Being a Graphic Design major , listening to other artists speak about their work has influenced me to bring in other mediums as creative elements into my own design work. Viewing their work has expanded both my tastes and opened my mind to other avenues of creating art.
One of the most influential artists that I've been exposed to through VAP is Rocky Schenck. He is a well known and influential photographer who came across as relatable and genuine.”
Students are the not the only campus members who learn from the lecture series. Newest member of the Visual Arts and New Media Department, Associate Professor Peter Tucker, is also eager to hear from the art professionals.
He notes, “As an artist, I am always interested in where artists' get their inspiration and how they make decisions about materials and the final creative output.”
