Linda Dorsten, professor of sociology and coordinator of the Interdisciplinary Minor in Public Health at SUNY Fredonia, and Dr. Yuhui Li (Rowan University), are recipients of a Funds for the Advance of the Discipline (FAD) award to continue their study of health in China. Their project is titled, "Data Collection and Modeling in Hard-to-Study but Rapidly Growing Populations:  Socio-Economic Development, Ethnic Population and Elder Health in China."

"Supported by the American Sociological Association through a matching grant from the National Science Foundation, the goal (of the FAD grant) is to nurture the development of scientific knowledge by funding small, groundbreaking research initiatives and other important scientific research activities.  FAD awards provide scholars with grants for innovative research that has the potential for challenging the discipline, stimulating new lines of research, and creating new networks of scientific collaboration. The award is intended to provide opportunities for substantive and methodological breakthroughs, broaden the dissemination of scientific knowledge, and provide leverage for acquisition of additional research funds."

Approximately 14 FAD grants are awarded each year.

Dr. Dorsten and colleague will use their FAD award to continue interviews with Uyghur Muslim elders in villages of Xinjiang Autonomous Province, home of Uyghur people. Xinjiang borders Tibet, Qinghai, Gansu, Mongolia, Kazakhstan, Kirghizstan, Uzbekistan, Tadzhikistan, Afghanistan, Pakistan and India.
