The theme “The New Negro” will be explored from various perspectives at a student conference to be held Tuesday, Nov. 16, 4 to 7 p.m., at the Williams Center. Following the keynote address by Vice President for Academic Affairs Virginia Horvath, individual presentations will be given by four teams of students as part of their Senior Capstone class in History.
These topics include: “Gender in the New Negro Movement,” by Rachel Morse and Robert Lorenz, and “The New Negro Message in the Music,” by Matt Gerber and Scott Costantini, both from 4:30 to 5:20 p.m. in S104A and S104B, respectively; “Space & Place in the New Negro Movement,” by Steve Sheldon and Patrick Capruso, and “The Historical Context of the New Negro,” by Nick Weaver and Rebecca Yochum, both 5:30 to 6:20 p.m. in S104A and S104B, respectively.
Four SUNY Fredonia faculty members -- Drs. Ingrid Johnston-Robledo, Saundra Liggins, Leesa Rittelmann and. Bruce Simon – will each be assigned to one of the presentations as a commentator.
Questions, comments and suggestions from members of the audience will be welcome after each panel completes its presentation.
The conference will conclude with a reception hosted by African American Studies and Curriculum & Academic Support.
