Dr. Cedric B. Howard has been named the new Vice President for Student Affairs at the State University of New York at Fredonia. He will assume his duties at Fredonia on Aug. 1.
Dr. Howard currently serves as Vice Chancellor for Student and Enrollment Services at the University of Washington at Tacoma, a position he has held since 2007. In that role, he led student enrollment services including admissions, financial aid, registrar, career development and student fellowships and merit awards; student engagement, including the campus activities board, student organizations and government, conduct, housing, volunteer services, student leadership development, and recreational and fitness centers; student success, including the counseling center, health center, disability support services, and support to international students and veterans; management, including strategic planning and budget management, and student research and effectiveness; and campus traditions, including Commencement, New Student Convocation, and a MLK Unity Breakfast.
Dr. Howard holds a B.S. in Psychology from Georgia College and State University, M.Ed. in Educational Administration from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, and Ph.D. in Higher and Adult Education from the University of Memphis.
In previous positions, Dr. Howard served as the Director of Student Affairs at the University of South Florida in St. Petersburg, Dean of Student Affairs and Chief Student Affairs Officer at LeMoyne-Owen College in Memphis, Tenn.; Director of the Diversity Center and Student Programs at Weber State University in Ogden, Utah; and Coordinator of Student Support Services at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. He has worked with the Boys and Girls Clubs of South Puget Sound, and is licensed and certified as a girls basketball official at the varsity level, and also for military and IAABO (International Basketball Federation) basketball. Dr. Howard was the recipient of the Student Affairs Professionals in Higher Education (NASPA) Region V Scott Goodnight Award for Outstanding Dean in 2014 and the Washington Student Achievement Council’s College Bound Champion Award in 2015.
In accepting the position, Dr. Howard noted, “During my visit to campus, I was consumed by the warmth and kindness demonstrated by members of the Fredonia family. The visit showcased the passion of faculty and staff toward students and the greater Fredonia/Dunkirk communities. After visiting Fredonia, I was left with a resounding, affirmative impression of the promising work being accomplished across campus and the university’s commitment to excellence. Both were very appealing to me.
I am very appreciative of this opportunity to join Fredonia’s Student Affairs team and serve as a partner for future development of SEM (Strategic Enrollment Management) initiatives with campus stakeholders.”
