Jeanette McVicker, professor of English, has been working on a philosophical investigation of subjectivity as constructed by mainstream news media for the past year. The first leg of that project was published this summer: “The Task of Journalism in the Age of Terrorism: Imagining the Profane” in Philosophy Today 56(2), 243-252, May 2012, ed. David Pellauer.
The second part of the project, on youth subjectivity and media representation, was delivered in two distinct papers. Part one was given at the Joint Journalism Historians-Communication History conference in March at John Jay College, NYC. Part two was delivered at the International Association for Philosophy and Literature, held in May-June at the University of Tallinn, in Tallinn, Estonia (“The Self-Fashioning of Youth: Journalism’s Crisis of Representation”).
