The Women’s Student Union will host Judy Norsigian to present a lecture on “Our Bodies Ourselves.” The event will take place Wednesday, March 23 at 7 p.m. in McEwen 201 as a continuance of Women’s History Month. The lecture is free and open to the public.
“Our Bodies Ourselves” (OBOS), also known as the Boston Women’s Health Book Collective (BWHBC), is a nonprofit, public interest women’s health education, advocacy, and consulting organization. Beginning in 1970 with the publication of the first edition of “Our Bodies, Ourselves,” OBOS has inspired the women’s health movement.
Norsigian is the director and co-founder of BWHBC. Her lecture is focused on the latest edition of “Our Bodies Ourselves,” which tackles health education and women's health issues.
In the late 1970s, the book became a national bestseller. Several decades later, four million copies have been sold and another 100,000 copies have been donated to women's groups, creating an estimated readership of more than twenty million worldwide.
All proceeds from the sale of books (approximately $1.5 million over the years) have been allocated to support the work of OBOS and more than 50 other women's health projects globally.
