Eighteen of these students will visit the Fredonia campus later this summer and are in need of host families as they continue work on this project. |
Eighteen Turkish students will be visiting SUNY Fredonia for two weeks this August and September as part of a SUNY Fredonia grant funded by the U.S. Department of State. The students are part of a project called “Youth Filmmaking Project in Turkey,” directed by SUNY Fredonia Communication faculty members Nefin Dinc, assistant professor of TV and Digital Film Design and Production, and Ted Schwalbe, department chair.
Host families are needed to house students for two weeks beginning Aug. 24 through Sept. 9. Ideally, students will be placed together in groups of two or three. Most of the students will understand English, but their English speaking skills may be minimal. Hosts will be expected to house the students and provide some meals. All transportation will be handled by SUNY Fredonia, including sightseeing and entertainment activities.
If you are interested in being a host family, please contact Professor Schwalbe at 716-673-3410 or Schwalbe@fredonia.edu.
Professor Dinc has spent the past year working with the students and teaching them the basics of shooting and editing video. The project goal is for each of the sites to produce three short films that deal with issues relating to democracy, human rights, tolerance and diversity, women’s issues and economic empowerment. In total 72 students from 6 cities are involved, although only 18 will be selected to come to Fredonia. While here, they will work with SUNY Fredonia students to enhance their films. Screenings of the films will take place locally in Fredonia, Jamestown and Buffalo. Additional screenings will take place in New York City, Boston and Washington D.C., as well as Istanbul, Ankara and Diyarbakir in Turkey.
