Michael Markham, assistant professor of Music History in the School of Music, has written a new essay exploring the deeper roots of the ongoing squabble between rock and pop critics, rockism vs. poptimism. In it he traces the same struggle back to Beethoven and up through modern music.

Dr. Markham is a regular contributor at the Los Angeles Review of Books where he supplies essays on the contemporary reception of classical music.
