The Department of Mathematical Sciences at SUNY Fredonia will once again host its annual Pi Day event on Thursday, March 12 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in Dods Hall.
Pi (π) is a mathematical constant which represents any circle’s circumference divided by its diameter. It is also equal to the area of a circle divided by the square of its radius. When calculated, it is expressed as 3.14…. with over 1 trillion digits past the decimal point.
Pi Day has been celebrated around the world by math enthusiasts annually since 1998 and at SUNY Fredonia since 2002. The event creatively allows students to showcase their academic skills while simultaneously broadening the community’s knowledge and appreciation for mathematics in a fun and inviting atmosphere.
This year’s event will feature a “SurPiVer” contest, modeled after the well-known reality TV show, “Survivor.” SurPiVer will require students to apply their math skills to overcome a series of challenges without being exiled to “Pi Land.” The winning team will walk away with the coveted Pi Cup.
Approximately 15 teams are set to take part in the experience. Department faculty and students are participating in the event under the direction of its outreach committee, which includes Dr. Julia Wilson, Dr. Lan Cheng, Dr. Keary Howard, Dr. Robert Rogers, Kim Conti and Becky Conti.
“We celebrate Pi Day every year because it’s a great chance to hang out with our students,” Dr. Wilson, associate professor of mathematical sciences, said of the event. “Each year we choose an event that has some cool math and a lot of crazy silliness. The students get pretty competitive, but all in good fun.”
SUNY Fredonia’s Department of Mathematical Sciences helps prepare students for the lifelong study and use of mathematics. Its courses are designed to develop mathematical thinking and communication skills. The program also sharpens students’ abilities in quantitative and logical reasoning needed for informed citizenship and productive employment.
