As many math enthusiasts around the world are aware, “Pi Day” (celebrated March 14) is just around the corner. As the date nears, students and staff in the Department of Mathematical Sciences at Fredonia are preparing to celebrate with their annual Pi Day event, to be held March 7 to avoid conflicts with the scheduled spring break.

The theme of this year’s celebration, with a nod to the Food Network, is “Hell’s Kitchen: Pi Edition.” Therefore, tests include both math problems, as well as food challenges.
The culmination of the event will take place in McEwen Hall Room 209, from 6 to 7:30 p.m., and refreshments (including pie) will be served.
The contest begins with a scavenger hunt starting at noon on the day of the event. It then moves into three rounds as teams compete for a shot at the finals.
The three teams that go to the finals win t-shirts “that money can’t buy,” according to Distinguished Teaching Professor Keary Howard of the Department of Mathematical Sciences. However, only one team (the winning team) can have their names inscribed on the “Pi Cup.”
Conducted entirely by graduate students and faculty within the Department of Mathematical Sciences, students from any major, mathematical or not, are encouraged to enter. Teams of four to six people must sign up to participate outside of the “fish bowl” in the Department of Mathematical Sciences from Feb. 27 to March 5.
