A panel discussion will explore “Mental Health in the Corrections System” on Wednesday, March 13, 7 to 9 p.m., at the Williams Center Horizon Room to help commemorate Criminal Justice Month during March, a time perhaps better known for basketball tournaments and St. Patrick’s Day.
Sponsored by SUNY Fredonia’s Criminal Justice program and its Criminal Justice Club, the session will reflect on the large numbers of mentally ill who are caught up in the criminal justice system.
“In fact, more of those suffering with mental illnesses are being housed in our nation’s correctional institutions than are being treated in other institutions, and many misconceptions abound as to why that situation exists,” said Dr. Melanie Pallone, a criminal justice faculty member and attorney.
Each member of the panel, comprised of local professionals who treat this population, will present his/her professional perspective on the issue for 10-15 minutes. Questions from members of the audience will be addressed by panel members after their remarks.
“We hope to entertain a healthy discussion about this important topic,” Pallone said.
The panel discussion is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served.
