Dr. Michael Jabot |
Michael Jabot, SUNY Fredonia professor in the College of Education, has been named by Achieve, Inc. and the National Research Council to help in a nationwide effort to shape science education standards for the next generation.
Dr. Jabot, who teaches science education at SUNY Fredonia, will represent New York State on a nationwide panel focusing on a project entitled Next Generation of Science Standards (NGSS). New York State was one of 20 states chosen to contribute to the NGSS project. Dr. Jabot’s work begins with his leadership of the New York State committee that will report to the national panel.
“The work that this committee will be doing will help shape the future of science education both in New York State as well as across the country,” said Dr. Jabot. “It is the hope that our work will map out what students will need to be successful in any career involving science, technology, engineering or mathematics.”
Formed to create a solid foundation for the K-12 science education curriculum, the NGSS is a joint effort between the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the National Science Teachers Association and the National Research Council.
Praising the new panel of state leaders, Michael Cohen, President of Achieve, Inc., a bipartisan education reform organization based in Washington, D.C., said, “This will be a collaborative process that will lead to a set of standards that will provide America’s students with a strong foundation in science for the 21st century and will support college and career readiness for all."
Dr. Jabot has been involved with the NRC for a number of years as a faculty member for the National Science Resource Center, which gives professional development outreach to U.S. and international educators.
