Being hailed by her advisor who is also one of her professors as “a stellar student on top of it all” has earned Morgan Smith, a senior from Webster, N.Y., majoring in Environmental Sciences, the honor of September 2013 Student of the Month by the Office of Residence Life.

Dr. Sherri Mason, who filed the nomination for the first student award of 2013-2014, said Smith has increased her engagement and participation in two major environmental groups on campus, the Department of Environmental Affairs and Campus Climate Committee, participates in numerous activities within her major, and is also a member of Mason’s research group.

Smith has been involved in various beach cleanup efforts, organized the Earth Week flash mob and was one of two students who conducted the Residence Hall waste audit last spring.

“Every time I have asked her to assist recruiting prospective students, she has been more than happy to oblige,” Mason said.

Smith spent a semester studying abroad at the University of Otago in New Zealand to complete course work in ecology studies.

Enthusiasm and motivation are not limited to the environment. Smith became active in dance as a member of Orchesis soon after arriving at Fredonia.

Smith is enrolled in the Honors Program and is a member of Alpha Lambda Delta Honors Society and the Golden Key Honors Society. She has received the Dennis R. and Kathryn L. Costello Scholarship and the Michael S. Lawton Scholarship, among many academic awards.

She is, quite simply, a well-rounded student and member of the campus community.

“I love Fredonia for many reasons,” Smith explained. “There are so many opportunities to get involved in both your major and your interests. The environment at Fredonia is so friendly and warm that it would be impossible not to enjoy it.”

Smith, who plans to graduate Summa Cum Laude this spring, would like to continue her education in the graduate program at SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry in the fall of 2014.

The Student of the Month program was implemented in 2003 to recognize students who are well-rounded, excel in their academics and contribute positively to the campus and community.
