One head coach, two athletic trainers, and several assistant coaches have been added to the Fredonia Blue Devils athletics staff on the eve of 2018-19 academic year.
The new head coach is Matt Johnson of women's tennis. He is a 2018 graduate of Berry College, where he played two seasons of men's tennis. He also played at Penn State Behrend and has served as a tennis instructor at the Chautauqua Institution.
Jay Martinez and Tory Trzyna have been appointed assistant athletic trainers. Martinez's resume includes stops at Ottawa University in Surprise, Ariz., Elmira College, as well as a stint with the San Francisco Giants. Trzyna comes to Fredonia from Wellston (Ohio) High School following college stops at Ohio University, Canisius College, and the University at Buffalo.
New assistant coaches hired are: Ben Chatley (men's and women's swimming), Taylor Chwalinski (men's and women's swimming), Reid Lesswing (men's ice hockey), Ryan Ross (men's soccer), Madison Szpaicher (women's volleyball), and Meghann Kilgallon (men's and women's diving). In addition, Derek Fie has been appointed sports information assistant.
Earlier in the summer, Sarah Cartmill (women's basketball) and Marykate Edmunds (women's lacrosse) were appointed as new head coaches.
Three Blue Devil teams reported for pre-season drills this week, with three more reporting next week. This week's arrivals are men's soccer, women's soccer, and women's volleyball. Next week, women's cheerleading, men's and women's cross country, and women's tennis report.
