French composers of the 20th and 21st centuries are the focus of the annual “Nusound” symposium at SUNY Fredonia, presented by the student-run Ethos New Music Society Feb. 16 through 21.
In addition to two chamber music concerts, a song recital, a woodwind concert, and a gala concert featuring large ensembles of the Fredonia School of Music, “Nusound 7: French Masters” will feature two guest lectures about the music of French composer Claude Debussy. The guest lecturer is David Grayson, professor of musicology at the University of Minnesota. An authority on Debussy, Dr. Grayson is an editor of the journal, Cahiers Debussy, and has written and lectured widely on the composer and his music.
Performers during the musical events are the Florestan Recital Project, faculty and students of the Fredonia School of Music, the Faculty Woodwind Quintet, the Fredonia Guitar Quartet, and student Concerto Competition winners Scott Horsington and Phil Servati.
“The Nusound symposium is an amazing accomplishment that adds much to the campus scene,” noted Director of the Fredonia School of Music Karl Boelter. Sponsored by the Student Association, Ethos has, since its founding in 1977, promoted new music of the 20th and 21st centuries through visiting composers and performers of national and international reputation, and the performance of compositions by SUNY Fredonia faculty and students.
