Operation Breakfast Rescue

Student volunteers like Jesse Duane and Max Melo, above, make Operation Breakfast Rescue possible every year at SUNY Fredonia, benefiting the food bank of the Chautauqua County Rural Ministry.

By Georgie Fu, '12

SUNY Fredonia’s eighth Operation Breakfast Rescue will accept breakfast food item donations to benefit the Chautauqua County Rural Ministry's "Friendly Kitchen" on March 6, 7, and 8 this year.

The breakfast food items can be dropped off on Thursday, March 8, in the Williams Center Temporary Office Complex, room G-138 (trailer next to Dod's Hall), from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Additional donations can be placed in boxes, which will be located in the Daniel A. Reed Library on Tuesday, March 6 and Wednesday, March 7 (all day).

Over 260 pounds of food were collected last semester. The food items donated included oatmeal, cream of wheat, a variety of cold cereal, pancake mixes, breakfast bars, baby formula, canned fruit, and other shelf-stable breakfast foods.

The Rural Ministry is a United Way, grassroots advocacy agency that serves impoverished families, meets the needs of the homeless, working poor and disenfranchised in Chautauqua County. It is in needs of breakfast items, such as cereal, oatmeal, pancake mix, breakfast bars, canned fruit or other shelf-stable foods.

The campus holds Operation Breakfast Rescue each semester, and last year, more than 420 pounds of food were collected.

Operation Breakfast Rescue is led by Joyce Harvard Smith, Coordinator of Volunteer and Community Services with assistance from VCS intern, Axel Melo-DeJesus. This special event is sponsored by Volunteer and Community Services in coordination with the Daniel A. Reed Library and Delta Chi. The boxes for this endeavor are donated by Custodial Services.
