SUNY Fredonia will co-sponsor the 7th Annual “Out of the Darkness” walk on Saturday, Oct. 2, to benefit the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. The four-mile walk begins at 1 p.m. at the campus clock tower at the corner of University Parkway and Symphony Circle.

More than 190 "Out of the Darkness" community walks will take place across the country this fall. These events join together thousands of people nationwide to raise money and awareness to prevent suicide and save lives. Since 2004, the first year for these walks, participants and sponsors have raised $12 million for the cause.

The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention is the leading national non-profit organization exclusively dedicated to understanding and preventing suicide through research, education and advocacy, and to reaching out to people with mental disorders and those impacted by suicide. For the past 20 years, the foundation has been actively involved in investing in research studies, providing education and information regarding suicide to professionals, advocating for policies and legislation that can help prevent suicide, and offering programs for survivors of suicide loss.

The walk is open to the community and those interested can pre-register and also donate online at supporting.afsp.org. Registration is free and available until Oct. 1. In person registration is also available at noon at the walk. Donations will be accepted until Dec. 31.

“Out of the Darkness” is sponsored by the Psychology Club, Fredonia State of Mind, the Pride Alliance, the Volunteer and Community Services Office, and members of the faculty, staff and local community.
