“Mr. Marmalade,” an experimental dark comedy that examines problematic human relationships through the lens of a child – incorporating themes of drug addiction, abuse and love -- will be presented by SUNY Fredonia’s Performing Arts Company, beginning Thursday, March 31, at the Alice C. Bartlett Theatre.
Performances of “Mr. Marmalade,” which had its Off-Broadway debut in 2005, will be held at 8 p.m. on March 31 through April 2. Admission is free. The play is intended for mature audiences due to adult language, themes and nudity.
Noah Haidle’s play presents sophomore Acting major Madison Osgood as the troubled Lucy, a four-year-old girl, and Nicholas Gerwitz, a junior Acting major who plays Mr. Marmalade, her imaginary friend, in the lead roles.
Mr. Marmalade doesn’t have enough time to spend with Lucy and exhibits a wide range of problems that include physical abuse of his personal assistant and addictions to cocaine and pornography. Even Lucy’s only real-life friend, Larry, a five-year-old, is flawed, having attempted to commit suicide.
Also featured in the cast are Jacob Kahn, Kimberly Abrams, Jake Bradley, Lynn Domico, Lisa Michaels, Elena Box and Andrew Albageise.
The sets were designed by Theresa Pierce, with lighting by Gerald Aragon and sound by Hilda Myer. Costumes were created by Amra Cuhel. Props were coordinated by Kendall McNichols and Myava Cuhel.
Nicholas Kowerko, a senior Interdisciplinary Studies major, with a concentration in Arts Administration, directs the production.
