A cutting-edge, dark comedy, “Our Lady of 121st Street”, will be presented by SUNY Fredonia’s Performing Arts Company beginning Saturday, Feb. 11, in Fenton Hall Room 105. The play, written by New York playwright and screenwriter Stephen Adly Guirgis, presents a wake in a Harlem neighborhood for the formidable nun, Sister Rose, whose corpse has been stolen, bringing out the true colors of those who knew her.
The performances of "Our Lady of 121st Street," directed by Matt Antar, B.F.A. acting senior, will continue at 9 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 11 and at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 11 with free admission. The show had its Off-Broadway debut in 2003 at the Union Square Theatre, New York City. This comedy earned several 2003 Drama Desk and New York Critics’ Circle award nominations
Later this semester, PAC will also present the Broadway show “The Little Dog Laughed”, scripted by Douglas Carter Beane, at 8 p.m. on Friday, March 30; Saturday, March 31; and at 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 1 in the Bartlett Theatre. Students will be charged a price of $3 and general admission will be $6.
In the Spring Experimental series, one-act musical “[title of show]” with music and lyrics by Jeff Bowen and a book by Hunter Bell will be performed by PAC on Thursday, April 26 and Friday, April 27 at 8 p.m. in the Bartlett Theatre with free admission.
Author of the upcoming play, Guirgis is a member of the New York City LAByinth Theater Company. He is praised by the New York Times as one of the finest imaginations for dialogue to come along in years. His outstanding script works include “Jesus Hopped the A Train”, “In Arabia, We’d All Be Kings”, and “The Little Flower of East Orange.” As a television writer, Guirgis is credited in “NYPD Blue”, “UC: Undercover”, and “Big Apple”.
