“Let’s Party Like its 199-Pi” is the theme for the 10th Annual Pi Day Scavenger Hunt sponsored by SUNY Fredonia Department of Mathematical Sciences, which will be held March 8, at 6 p.m. in McEwen 209. Pi Day is a day of celebration, which recognizes the importance of math in every-day life.
“Pi,” represented by the Greek letter “Π,” is the mathematical constant whose value is the ratio of any circle’s circumference to its diameter. As a result, Pi Day is traditionally observed on March 14, due to the first three digits of pi, 3.14.
This year, March 14 falls during Spring Break, but that shouldn’t “d(e)rive” anyone from attending the day-long celebration!
Over a dozen teams will compete for bragging rights, and the coveted Pi Cup. Four ‘90s themed events are planned: Three and a Little Bit More Scavenger Hunt, Pi-gram Geometry, S-Pi-ce Girl Makeover, and Third Pi Blind.
Pi Day is organized by the department’s Outreach Committee, comprised of department faculty including co-chairs Julia Wilson and Lan Cheng, Keary Howard, Robert Rogers, Kim Conti, Rebecca Conti, Tedi Cox, Zach Teetsel, Michelle Terranova, Mimi Gulick, and Michael Humbert.
The Department of Mathematical Sciences helps prepare students for the lifelong study and use of mathematics through courses designed to develop mathematical thinking and communication skills. The program also sharpens students’ abilities in quantitative and logical reasoning needed for informed citizenship and productive employment.
