A varied selection of events -- from a blockbuster movie to a “silent disco” to fitness classes -- await students every day during Welcome Week at SUNY Fredonia.  All Welcome Week activities are free and intended for SUNY Fredonia students only. The Student Association Sponsors the events, which are hosted by Spectrum Entertainment and STEPS.

An outdoor showing in Dods Grove of “The Great Gatsby,” a well-cast adaption of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic story set in the 1900s that stars Leonardo DiCaprio, launches the festivities on Sunday, Aug. 25. The screening begins at 10 p.m.

Zumba classes, consisting of four, 30-minute workout sessions, will be staged on Monday, Aug. 26, from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Williams Center Multipurpose Room. Snacks will be served.

From 7 to 10 p.m. on Tuesday in the Tim Hortons (Williams Center) outdoor patio, a Silent Disco is planned. This event features two live DJs on wireless networks spinning discs simultaneously.  Students can use their Fred ID to secure a set of headphones to listen to and then dance to the DJ of their liking. Only those with headphones will hear the music.

Students who play a musical instrument can join a jam session on Wednesday, Aug. 28, from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Amphitheatre. And if they’re not musically inclined, students can simply listen to the music and relax.

STEPS will present “Equalogy,” an interactive theater production that raises awareness about acquaintance rape and dating violence, on Thursday, Aug. 29, from 7 to 8:30 p.m., at Marvel Theatre.

The week’s final event, bingo – offering more than $1,000 worth in prizes – will be held on Friday, Aug. 30, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Tim Hortons’ outdoor patio. Students with FRED IDs will be given three bingo boards. Prizes include a flat-screen TV, iPods, movies, gift cards and e-readers. Free ice cream novelties will be served while supplies last.

In case of rain, all outdoor events will be moved to the the Williams Center Multipurpose Room.
