FREDONIA, N.Y. — Feb. 9, 2009 — Brian Turner, Iraq War Veteran and author of the 2005 Beatrice Hawley award-winning book, “Here, Bullet,” will visit SUNY Fredonia on Wednesday, Feb. 18.

His appearance will begin with a talk at 2 p.m. in room 127 of Fenton Hall. Then, at 7 p.m. in Rosch Recital Hall, Turner will read selections of his poetry, and SUNY Fredonia Assistant Professor of Music Rob Deemer will perform a piece inspired by Turner's work immediately following the reading.Turner will then lead a book-signing session immediately following the Rosch performances. All of the day’s events are free and open to the public.

Turner served in the U.S. Army for seven years. He was first deployed to Bosnia-Herzegovina in 1999 with the 10th Mountain Division. In 2003, he became an infantry team leader in Iraq, with the 3rd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division. Much of Turner’s work was written while in Iraq and is essential in capturing both sides of the war’s story.

Regarding Turner, the New Yorker magazine has written, “As a war poet, (Brian Turner) sidesteps the classic distinction between romance and irony, opting instead for the surreal.”

The Department of English, led by Associate Professor James Stevens, is hosting the event through its Mary Louise White Fund, an endowment fund within the Fredonia College Foundation
