NY Fredonia will host a reading event in celebration of Earth Day, featuring faculty and students reading poetry that promotes sustainability and ecological awareness. The event will take place Wednesday, April 22, at 6 p.m. in the Multipurpose Room of the Williams Center. It is free and open to the public.

Featured readers include Aimee Nezhukumatathil, associate professor of English and author of the award-winning collections At the Drive-In Volcano and Miracle Fruit. James Thomas Stevens, associate professor of English and director of American Indian Studies, has written seven books on poetry including Tokinish and Combing the Snakes from his Hair. The event will also showcase readings by students Andrew McGirr, Sigma Tau Delta member, and an original work by Catherine Colmerauer of the Writer’s Ring.

English department facility, Sigma Tau Delta, and the Writer’s Ring are hosting the event as part of National Poetry Month.

Earth Day is dedicated to the environmental health of the planet. It is observed on April 22 around the world with programs and activities designed to educate people on the Earth’s environment, including its threats and proactive steps to help improve it.

SUNY Fredonia’s English Department helps students to develop their abilities in interpretation, communication, reading, and writing. It fosters their understanding and respect for both individual and cultural commonalities and differences. In addition, it helps future English teachers develop the ideas and practices that will make them effective in the classrooms of an ever-increasingly complex and diverse society.
