Fredonia senior Mikayla Capestrani (Jamestown/Jamestown) is headed to her first NCAA Division III meet in the women's pole vault.
She will compete Friday at the Birmingham CrossPlex in Birmingham, Alabama. Her event is scheduled for 11 a.m. Friday.
Capestrani qualified for nationals on the strength of her school-record vault of 3.69 meters last Saturday during the All-Atlantic Regional Track & Field championship meet at Ithaca College.
Although that was one centimeter short than what she needed, Capestrani earned her spot Monday afternoon when one of the original 17 qualifiers withdrew from the event.
Other Fredonia women in the top 50 on the NCAA performance lists are: senior Kristen Sawyer (Lockport/Lockport), tied for 46th in the pole vault; freshman Cassie Serafin (Cheektowaga/Depew), tied for 43rd in the triple jump; senior Rachel Williams (Lockport/Lockport), 42nd in the 20-pound weight throw; and senior Brittany Feldman (Jamestown/Southwestern), 19th in the 400 meters.
On the men's side, senior Justyn Haines (Albion/Albion) was 23rd in the pole vault and senior Damone Brown (Haverstraw/North Rockland) 24th in the shot put.
