Locally known potters will be selling a wide array of handcrafted mugs, trays, bowls and jewelry at the annual Pottery Show and Sale to benefit Fredonia’s Health Professions School Preparation Scholarship Fund on Wednesday, Dec. 6, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., in the Williams Center Multipurpose Room.
Fredonia faculty and staff – Biology Professor Ted Lee, Music Professor David Rudge and Chief of Police Ann Burns – are part of the pottery contingent that includes Michele Ballachino, Ann Janik, Debbie Kotar, Rhonda Lee, Carol Samuelson and Cynthia Fitzgerald. A portion of the proceeds from each sale will be donated by the potter to the scholarship fund.
All potters created their works on pottery wheels at Mudslingers, a pottery studio in downtown Fredonia owned and operated by Fredonia alumnus Ron Nasca, who is a strong supporter and teacher of the potters.
The scholarship fund was established in 2015 to provide support to students preparing for careers in medicine, dentistry, optometry, veterinary medicine and other health professions. The cost to apply to professional schools is high and some students do not have the financial resources needed to pursue admission to these schools.
The fund provides financial support to students who want to take preparatory courses for professional exams (such as the Medical College Admission Test, or MCAT) required for admission, as well as to help cover the costs of the actual exams and for assistance with expenses incurred when applying to medical and other health professional schools. Costs to enroll in the MCAT prep course, take the MCAT exam and apply to medical school can reach several thousand dollars.
Fredonia has students who would benefit greatly from this support from the scholarship fund to help them realize their dreams of becoming health care professionals.
