President Virginia Horvath was honored Sept 19 by the Girls Scouts of Western New York with its Women of Distinction Award at a gala at Salvatore's Italian Gardens in Buffalo.
Amy Jo Dorler, a local scout leader and SUNY Fredonia secretary in the Department of Sociology, Anthropology, Social Work and Criminal Justice, nominated Dr. Horvath for the award. Dr. Horvath was introduced by 11-year Girl Scout Claire P. Raab, a student at Nardin Academy, whom Dr. Horvath mentored as part of the awards program.
Dr. Horvath was a Girl Scout for many years and earned the First Class distinction as a Cadette scout. She also enjoyed four summers at Camp Seven Hills in Holland, N.Y.
Awards were presented to nine women in leadership roles in the Western New York region who have demonstrated excellence in business, health care, sports and fitness, education, public service, and STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) careers. Other recipients of the 2013 awards included Mary Ann Coulson, senior vice president/branch manager for Morgan Stanley Wealth Management; Lisa Kirisits, CPA, managing partner of Kirisits & Associates, CPAs, PLLC: Cheryl Howe, executive vice president of operations for HeathNow New York, Inc.; University at Buffalo Head Women's Basketball Coach Felisha Legette-Jack; Janet Lomax, news anchor for News 10 NBC in Rochester; Heatherly Dukes, vice president for Nuclear Operations and Storage, CH2M Hill B&W West Valley, LLC; Nancy Blaschak, regional CEO for the American Red Cross; and Dr. Evelyn L. Kerney, Western New York Business Program administrator for Bryant & Stratton College.
