Six weeks into the 2010 RecycleMania competition, SUNY Fredonia is seeing results that are well ahead of its 2009 pace. The campus is ranked 96th of out of the 340 schools in this year's Per Capita Classic Competition Division, compared to the 160th ranking it held last year at this mark, when less than 290 schools participated.

In addition, Fredonia has generated 7.08 pounds of recycled materials per person thus far in 2010, compared to just 4.90 pounds per person a year ago.  This places the campus third among nine total competing SUNY schools in 2010, vs. the fourth-place standing it held in 2009, when just six SUNYs were in the field.

Best of all, the total weight collected to date is 57,760 pounds of recycled materials, well exceeding the campus goal of 8,000 pounds per week, or 48,000 pounds following week six.

"This is exactly the kind of growth we had been hoping for this year," said Kevin Cloos, Fredonia's director of Facilities Services. "The changes we've made to increase the kinds of material that can be accepted and the number of recycling locations, along with the single-source program we've implemented and our consistent communication of these improvements have all come together to play a role in these improved results."

The competition concludes on Saturday, March 27, so if you've been watching recyclable materials pile up your office or residence hall, be sure to do your part and contribute them to the cause before the end of the month. Together, SUNY Fredonia can continue to evolve and make a difference in this important campus-wide initiative.
