The Fredonia Percussion Guild is sponsoring the performance of the Saakumu Dance Troupe on Sunday, Oct. 23, at 6 p.m. in Dods Multi-purpose Room.
The award-winning Saakumu Dance Troupe, led by master of the Ghanaian xylophone Bernard Woma, is one of the leading traditional and contemporary dance and music groups in Ghana, West Africa.
The Sunday performance will included energetic dancing accompanied by talking drums, djembles, gyil, and the traditional xylophone used by those from the Dagara region.
On Monday, Oct. 24, two workshops will be held. The first will be will be based on traditional music of the Dagara Culture, given at 6 p.m. in Mason 1080. The second will be learning to play Ghanaian rhythms, given in Mason 1024 beginning at 8 p.m.
Saakumu Dance Troupe is dedicated to introducing audience to traditional and contemporary African dance and music. The company derive its repertoire on the variety of both traditional and contemporary cultures with creativity.
The artist founded association is driven by a passion for bringing innovative dances and world music to our audiences. In addition to collaborating with artists and presenters of all kinds, we are committed to building new audiences via performances.
Based in Medie, Accra, the Saakumu Dance Troupe has performed at important governmental functions, national and international music and dance festivals throughout Ghana and West Africa. The SDA is the designated official performing group at this year’s National Festival of Art and Culture, (NAFAC) the largest cultural festival in Ghana.
