Two Fredonia seniors from the same hometown broke women's indoor track and field school records Saturday, records which they already held.
Jamestown natives Mikayla Capestrani and Brittany Feldman set new marks in the pole vault and the 300 meters, respectively, at Cornell University's Marc Deneault Invitational inside Barton Hall.
Capestrani, who attended Jamestown High School, cleared 11 feet, 11 3/4 inches -- four inches higher than seven days earlier at Tiffin, Ohio -- to finish second in the event Saturday. She also moved to No. 16 on the NCAA Division 3 indoor performance list this winter. Feldman, a Southwestern High School graduate, was clocked in 41.30 seconds, which shaved 1.33 seconds off her previous school record set in Dec. 2015. She finished third in the event behind two women from Cornell, a NCAA Division 1 program.
Other Deneault highlights by Fredonia women:
Competing alongside Capestrani, senior Kristen Sawyer (Lockport/Lockport) finished fourth in the pole vault by clearing a personal-best 11 feet, 5 3/4 inches -- now No. 34 on the NCAA D3 performance list. As an aside, the Barton Hall record in the pole vault is still held by Jenn Stuczynski Suhr, a Fredonia native and Olympic champion, who cleared 15 feet, 1 1/2 inches in 2007.
In the triple jump, freshman Cassie Serafin (Cheektowaga/Depew) had a personal-best 10.78 meters (35 feet, 4 1/2 inches) to finished fourth -- first among NCAA D3 women. Also, senior Sarah Couperus (Marion/Marion) was fourth in a field of 18 high jumpers, and junior Emily Maguire (Oakdale/Connetquot) finished fourth in the 600 meters.
