Seven students from SUNY Fredonia will show the results of their research on four projects at the first SUNY-wide symposium of undergraduate research and creative activities on Tuesday, April 13, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the well of the Legislative Office Building in Albany, NY. The midday poster session will allow SUNY undergraduates the opportunity to present their research and creative academic projects to a large audience at Albany’s Legislative Office Building.

Emphasizing undergraduate student research projects and their impact on New York State, the event is titled, “SUNY Undergraduates Shaping New York’s Future: A Showcase of Scholarly Posters at the Capitol.”   It showcases the research and creative achievements of undergraduate students from all 64 SUNY institutions.

Sponsored by Undergraduate Academic Programs and Policies Committee of the SUNY University Faculty Senate, the event will feature approximately 100 student-hosted poster sessions, covering a diverse representation of disciplines. All of the undergraduate research has been supervised by SUNY faculty mentors.

The students and faculty representing SUNY Fredonia include

  • Senior from Holland, N.Y., Caitlin Zaremski, majoring in Spanish Adolescent Education, is presenting “English Only or Bilingual: A Sociolinguistic Analysis of Two NYS Schools Serving High Numbers of Students Learning English as Their Second Language.” Dr. Kate Mahoney of the College of Education mentored Ms. Zaremski.
     
  • Senior psychology majors Amanda Caldwell from Lackawanna, N.Y.,  and Amanda Ciesielski from Marilla, N.Y., along with Junior psychology major Alexandra Lugo from Fairport, N.Y., will present their project, “What Do Lesbians Bring on a Second Date?” mentored by Dr. Jennifer Dyck, psychology professor.
     
  • Senior biology majors Jessica Wooten from West Henrietta, N.Y.,  and Chengwei Sun from Shenyang, China, mentored by Dr. Jonathan Titus, professor of biology, will present, “The Effect of Garlic Mustard on Forest Soils & Understory Species in Western New York.”
     
  • Senior Emily Russell of Rochester, majoring in Communication Disorders and Sciences, authored the project, “Effects of Voice Therapy on Acoustic Vocal Parameters in Transsexual/Transgender Patients,” which was mentored by Dr. Bridget Russell of the Communication Disorders and Sciences department. Ms. Russell's poster will be presented by Katie Dylag, a senior from Corfu, N.Y., majoring in Communication Disorders and Sciences.
