On Thursday, April 8, Sigma Iota Rho (Honor Society of International Relations), in coordination with the International Institute of Buffalo and the International Studies Academic program at SUNY Fredonia, will host a campus event to promote awareness of the refugee question worldwide. The program, to begin at 7 p.m., will be held in S104 of the Williams Center.
This event will discuss the situation of refugees, how some of them are being settled in the United States, and more specifically, their settlement in Western New York. Several refugees will speak at the event, in conjunction with documentaries and power point presentations.
The event is free, but donations will be accepted to benefit the International Institute of Buffalo. All interested persons are invited to come to learn more about the refugee situation and gain a better understanding of the refugee problem while becoming more aware of the global era and how events that happen in Asia and in other parts of the world are affecting the United States.
Dr. Ivani Vassoler, director of International Studies, encourages students to attend the event so they can “become involved in community affairs, promote good causes, and raise awareness about the importance of protecting human rights worldwide."
For more information about the event, contact Lyndsay Harris, student event coordinator.
