A European Union simulation program will take place again at SUNY Fredonia April 12 through 15 when the SUNY Model European Union will simulate the European Council Summit.

Prof. Raymond Rushboldt of the political science department is the director of the SUNY Model European Union, based at the Fredonia campus.

Students are expected to convene at Fredonia from as far away as Poland. The campuses participating are from the U.K., Europe, and the Eastern U.S. SUNY campuses involved, in addition to Fredonia, are the University at Buffalo, Buffalo State College, SUNY Cortland, SUNY New Paltz, and SUNY Old Westbury.

"The primary purpose of SUNYMEU is to provide a framework for a simulation of a major EU issue," Professor Rushboldt said. "Researching the simulation topic and the assigned roles constitutes an important part of all students' preparatory work. The simulations themselves are held over a period of three days, with the venue alternating between the US and Europe."

Fredonia is preparing to handle 150 students who will be participating, all of whom have been assigned roles as heads and ministers of national European Union member state governments, the European Commission, the Council of Ministers, and the press.

Students prepare for the simulation at their own universities, with the help of faculty advisers. They also receive guidance through the SUNYMEU website, Angel course management site, and the annual SUNYMEU Manual ("blue book").

The event is sponsored by the Institute for European Union Studies, the SUNY MEU Council, and SUNY Fredonia.
