The strength and diversity of SUNY Fredonia’s degree programs in visual arts and new media is revealed in the current Art Gallery exhibit in the Rockefeller Arts Center. Entitled, “The Fredonia Showcase,” the show will remain in the gallery through Sunday, Feb. 11, featuring an outstanding array of student work from degree programs offered through the Department of Visual Arts and New Media.

A total of 16 faculty members have selected the best examples of works completed by students in their studio classes--ranging from graphic design and ceramics to illustration and photography.

From the illustration and animation studio, Professor Jill Johnston-Price has submitted a student’s illustrations relating to the novel by Richard Adams, “Watership Down.” Several student posters from graphic design professor Janet Conradi are included. One, by recent graduate Xueyin Chen, entitled “Death by Tomato,” was selected for the SUNY Student Art Exhibition in Albany. It depicts a humorous yet serious history lesson about tomatoes. Another poster depicts the more serious topic of book burning.

Alberto Rey has submitted a student’s work with charcoal, a large piece which depicts, using a balance of both detail and swift, painterly lines, an emotion of someone nearing the end of their life.

“The pieces showcase the department’s strong arts program,” Amy Gawronski, Art Gallery Coordinator, said.

The gallery is open Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 2 to 6 p.m., and Friday and Saturday from 2 to 8 p.m.
