The 22nd annual Rosa Parks Scholarship Competition, which recognizes student-created expressions that explore multiculturalism and celebration of diversity through art, music, language, dance and other art forms, is underway at SUNY Fredonia. Three winners will be selected in the competition, organized by the Center for Multicultural Affairs, and each will receive a $350 scholarship.
Entries can address injustices on a local, national or international level or may offer a vision to the Fredonia community to make the world a better place. Characteristics of winning entries in past years include originality, a provocative nature and strong emotional or intellectual impact, along with best use of the medium.
Jasmine Ranjitsingh, a graduate assistant in the Center for Multicultural Affairs, is coordinating this year’s competition. Entries will be accepted until 4 p.m. March 11. Currently enrolled students who are not previous winners or who have been paid for published work in the last five years may enter. Winners will be announced March 28.
The competition was founded in 1989 to honor Parks, an African-American Civil Rights activist whose act of civil disobedience – not surrendering her seat on a bus to a white passenger -- led to the Montgomery Bus Boycott in 1955 and helped launch the Modern Day Civil Rights Movement.
