The 24th annual Fredonia Summer Music Festival will be held from Sunday, June 29 through Saturday, July 5. Open to wind, brass and percussion students currently enrolled in grades 9 through 12, the festival offers a friendly and relaxed setting for musical growth through performance of large ensemble and chamber music.
In addition to band rehearsals, chamber ensembles and jazz groups, students will attend daily musicianship classes (music theory, conducting, music technology, African drumming, iPad ensemble and breathing gym/relaxation class), participate in master classes, attend special evening recitals, and have time for individual practice and recreation. The Fredonia Faculty Brass, Woodwind and Percussion ensembles will be featured during evening recitals.
The Wind Symphony will once again be directed by Martin Seggelke, director of Wind Ensembles at San Francisco State University. Prior to his appointment at SFSU, he was conductor of the University of Minnesota-Morris Wind Ensembles and Professor of Conducting and Clarinet. He also has taught conducting at the Eastman School of Music and served as Assistant to the Director of the Eastman Wind Ensemble and Eastman Wind Orchestra. Seggelke holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Conducting from the Eastman School of Music and a Master of Music in Conducting at SUNY Fredonia.
The Jazz Band will be directed by Bruce Johnstone, director of Jazz Studies at SUNY Fredonia. Johnstone, a well-known saxophonist, has performed with Maynard Ferguson, Dexter Gordon, The Woody Herman Band and many others.
Members of the Fredonia School of Music faculty will round out the teaching roster, including: Dr. Susan Royal, flute; Dr. Sarah Hamilton, oboe; Amrom Chodos, clarinet; Laura Koepke, bassoon; Dr. Wildy Zumwalt, saxophone; Dr. Marc Guy, horn; John Maguda, trumpet; Carl Mazzio, trombone; Barry Kilpatrick, euphonium; Ray Stewart, tuba; and Tiffany Nicely, percussion.
Registration for the Fredonia Summer Band Camp is only $720, which includes housing, meals and a camp t-shirt. Commuters pay $390 (meals not included) or $575 (meals included). The registration deadline is Friday, May 16.
A limited number of scholarships are offered based on the instrumentation needs of the camp - most often for oboe, bassoon, bass clarinet, French horn, and low brass.
